About
The program focuses on testing and making public the recreational water quality data in the Greater Victoria region. The primary purpose of the program is the protection of public health from contaminated water with the goal of providing the public with current, reliable water quality data. Furthermore, the program works to connect the community to their water by allowing people to become a part of the sampling process.
Staff are currently sampling one location weekly and are in the process of selecting new locations to monitor in the Greater Victoria area. During sampling, observations about water quality and the surrounding area are recorded along with the collection of water samples. These samples are then processed and analyzed with results being published on Swim Guide the following day.
Water testing protocol
We test for the presence of E. coli. and Enterococci with the use of the IDEXX system. The guidelines followed are the British Columbia’s recreational water quality guidelines, 2019, set by the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change Strategy.
We also take water temperature, and depth of clarity. At specific sampling sites we also measure dissolved oxygen, and pH, Alkalinity, Hardness, and Chlorine, as well as conductivity.
